Blavatnik Building

ESEA Sisters organised an evening of discussion and reflection on experiences of East and Southeast Asian community building in the UK. It brought together a range of panellists, together with moderators from ESEA Sisters.

Artists Erika Tan and June Lam joined Kim Chin for a discussion on the critical importance of queer Asian spaces, their experiences of ESEA solidarity (or lack thereof) in the UK art scenes across the last 25 years, and intersectional lived experiences of class and generational differences as practitioners with migrant backgrounds.
Isabella Kajiwara chaired the second panel, joined by singer and producer Lucinda Chua and artist Lulu Wang. This panel focused on imposter syndrome, confidence, the notion of model minorities and the assumptions surrounding ESEA artists.
The third panel was hosted by Mai Ta, joined by a roundtable of creatives: fashion designer Prae Chaiphet, and artists Wing-kei Hoang and Yeu-Lai Mo. This explored how their creative practices had been shaped by identity, body and voice, and the role of community in their work.

The event was organised and curated by ESEA Sister’s core team: Saorsa, Kim Chin, Mai Que Ta, Ying Suen, Sue Man, and Isabelle Kajiwara.
